Microbial Infection during the pregnancy

Bacterial vaginosis: This causes drug the time of pregnancy to approximately 10-30% of the women by the bacterial imbalance of the normal bacteria that exists in the female vagina.

This develops an itchy irritation feel as this happens due to the overgrowth of bacteria that generally occur in the female vagina which in pregnancy can be influenced by the shifting hormones. This infection is found and left untreated may result in the early birth of the baby or low birth weight. Sometimes this is even seen in non-pregnant women that could lead to the pelvic inflammatory disease which results in the fallopian damage.

This infection can be identified through symptoms such as itching around the vagina, greyish white discharge with a foul fishy odor and pain during urination, however, some women will not show any symptoms. This could be diagnosed by testing through the wet mount, PH test as bacterial vaginosis causes at the PH level higher than 4.5, microscopic slide test with KOH slide or a whiff test.
Chlamydia:  This cause high rate of infection of the amniotic sac and fluid and preterm birth. At some cases, this is highly involved in the risk of miscarriage. In this case, 75% of the women don’t show any symptoms. During and after pregnancy this travel from the cervix to infect your uterus or fallopian tube. This could be treated by the antibiotic given in dosage based on the severity of the infection.

Cytomegalovirus: It is a member of herpes family as this is passed frequently to babies during pregnancy. This doesn’t affect the baby but t some cases causes illness and long-term problem. At least 50% of women already have antibodies to this virus before pregnancy. However, passing the virus during the recurrent infection to the babies is low but once it is been affected the possibility of infection is much higher.

Listeriosis: The infection caused by eating food contaminated with bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. This can infect the placenta and causes the illness of baby or premature birth which results in the death of babies or long-term consequences. The symptoms are very common such as flu, chills, aches or a headache. This could be treated by IV antibiotic and ultrasound is done to check the baby growth. This can be avoided only by the intake of healthy food.
