Role of Organic Chemistry in Pharmaceuticals

The discipline of chemistry that involves the study of reactions, compositions structures, properties, and syntheses of compounds containing carbon, hydrocarbon and their derivatives.
The chemical compounds that are intended for use in diagnosis, treatment or cure are Pharmaceuticals.

This highly interdisciplinary field of science is integrated to bring out pharmaceutical drug compounds through different areas of science. Pharmaceutical drugs are synthesized by involving Organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry. The chemistry that deals with the design of new chemical compounds as drugs are Computational chemistry. The analysis and quality control of the pharmaceuticals is curated by Analytical Chemistry. Whereas the efficacy and toxicities of newly designed pharmaceutical compounds are done in Pharmacology.

A group of highly skilled organic chemists forms the foundation of the pharmaceutical industry. The manufacturing of bulk drugs or commercial drugs involves the direct supervision of organic chemists, who are involved in the R&D process of pharmaceuticals where new drugs are designed and synthesized. The manufacturing of dosage forms like tablets, capsules, and injections have to be done under the strict supervision of these qualified pharmacists.

In order to work in the pharmaceutical industry, one needs to have both interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

In the World Health Care sector, the Pharmaceutical industry is an important component mainly because of its potential in domestic and international markets. This has accelerated the career opportunities for qualified and experienced organic chemists both in the manufacturing and R&D areas.
