Current Researches on Stem Cells -A Bird’s eye view

Stem cells are cells that can differentiate into various types of cells and divide to produce its own type as well.Stem cells act as repair system for the body, restoring adult tissues. Stem cells are obtained from the Umbilical cord blood soon after the birth of a baby. It is also acquired from the bone marrow, blood and adipose tissue in adults.

Adult stem cells are extensively used in various therapies.

Current studies are based on how stem cells may be used to prevent or cure diseases such as Parkinson's disease, type 1 diabetes, heart disease, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer's disease, strokes, burns, osteoarthritis, vision and hearing loss. Stem cells could be used to replace or repair damaged tissue.

Recently, Stem cell therapy has been implemented in testing for erectile restoration in animal models. Stem Cells derived from multiple tissues have varied potential, and may function via local engraftment or paracrine signaling. Bone marrow-derived stem cells and adipose-derived stem cells have been used in this research and has yielded a promising effect.

The most important and interesting factor why scientists and researchers are much interested in stem cell might be  because in nearing future healthy heart cells could be developed in a laboratory may one day be transplanted into patients with heart disease, refilling the heart with healthy tissue.

Likewise, patients suffering from type I diabetes might be provided with pancreatic cells to replace the insulin-producing cells that have been destroyed by body’s own immune system. This is the only current therapy in research process whereas the present treatment is only pancreatic transplant which is actually a tedious one and is rarely successful.
